Syntax Energy Opens Its Control Room to the Public for On-Call Training

Members of the public can now operate a simulated version of the developer grid. Early results suggest the public is about as good at it as staff.

Syntax Energy has released the Outage Simulator, a training environment in which anyone can operate a simulation of the company's developer grid during a typical shift.

Participants respond to incidents including Friday deployments, missing environment variables and a database experiencing emotional instability. Every shift ends in an outage. The company says this reflects realism, not design.

Each completed shift produces an official outage report in the company's standard incident format, clearly marked as simulated.

Asked why the company would publish a tool that demonstrates its grid always fails, a spokesperson replied that the tool demonstrates the grid always fails eventually, which is a different and more optimistic statement.
