Syntax Energy Invites the Public to Investigate an Incident It Has Not Yet Acknowledged
BLACKSITE puts members of the public on the night shift in Harvest Hall B, where something is copying the billing database. Leadership has asked participants to keep the investor demo running.
Syntax Energy has released BLACKSITE, a training environment in which anyone can take the overnight on-call shift in Harvest Hall B, the data hall that runs the company's billing, harvest scoring and offset certificate archive.
Participants investigate a simulated intrusion with a working shell, a live network map and the hall's own logs, then decide how to contain it without taking customer services offline. The scenario is fictional. The company declined to say which parts.
Members of the leadership team call during each incident with requests. Early results show that participants who comply receive warmer performance reviews and lower incident ratings, a correlation the company describes as alignment.
Each incident ends with two documents: an engineering account of what happened, and the statement Corporate Communications published instead.
"Security is a mindset, and so is uptime. We have asked participants to hold both, ideally without touching anything."
About Syntax Energy Co.: a satirical utility that harvests wasted computation and sells the offset back. It is not an electric utility, a carbon registry, or a listed company. Figures are simulated.
