New Efficiency Initiative Successfully Increases Resource Consumption
Project Leaner made every rebuild 38% cheaper in energy terms. Engineers responded by rebuilding much more. Total consumption rose accordingly.
Project Leaner, the company's flagship efficiency programme, reduced the energy cost of a single rebuild from 2.1 kWh to 1.3 kWh, an improvement of 38%.
Because rebuilds became cheaper, engineers began rebuilding to check things they would previously have read. Rebuild volume has since more than doubled, and total build energy is now above where it started.
The company has described the outcome as a textbook case of efficiency working exactly as economists warned it would, and has requested that the textbook not be named.
Project Leaner will continue, under a new name, Project Leaner Still.
