The model

Coulomb's law: each charge makes a field E = k q r̂ / r², and fields from several charges add. Field lines start on positive charges and end on negative ones; their density shows the field strength.

The colour is the electric potential V = k q / r summed over charges, orange for positive and blue for negative. The faint contours are equipotentials, and field lines always cross them at right angles.

Try this
